MAMAMOO - Décalcomanie (2016)

  • Members: Hwasa (0:21), Solar (0:37), Wheein (1:31), Moonbyul (1:47)

  • The song’s title “Décalcomanie” is French for decalcomania, i.e., decal. In Korean, the term is used to describe people who resemble each other.1

  • The original music video was was replaced a day after its release (November 7), losing ~700000 views. The elevator scene with Solar at 4:23 had the male lead go in for a forced kiss, pinning Solar to the wall where she seeminly struggles to get out his hold. There was a public outcry from fans about how uncomfortable this scene was, causing RBW to release an edited version.2

  • In August 2016, MAMAMOO split into two subgroups: Angel Line (Solar and Wheein) and Rapper Line (Moonbyul and Hwasa). The groups released the songs “[Angel]” and “[DAB DAB]”, respectively, and challenged each other to see who could place higher in music charts. The Rapper Line ended up losing, requiring them to eat a spicy pork dish (tonkatsu) as punishment.3

  • This song is made by in-house Rainbowbridge World producer Kim Do Hoon.4 He has worked on other hits like K.Will’s “Please Don’t” (2012; [MMM 2015-03-16]), So Yu x Jungigo’s “Some” (2014; [MMM 2015-03-02]), and MAMAMOO’s “You’re the Best” (2016; [MMM 2016-03-07]).

  • Solar originally wanted her stage name to be Sunny, but Girls’ Generation already has a well-known member named Sunny. She then thought of Taeyang, which means sun in Korean, but BIGBANG also has a well-known member named Taeyang. The name Solar comes from the solmization of the chromatic scale: do re me fa so la ti do.5
